Salamanca is a relatively small friendly and welcoming city, located in the north west of the Iberian Peninsula, in the Castile and Leon region some 200 Km. from Madrid.

The University of Salamanca is the oldest in Spain and one of the first in Europe, together with those of Paris, Oxford and Bologna. This makes Salamanca one of the most important student centres in Spain, and a reference centre for Spanish in the world.

The city has a population of 180,000 inhabitants which makes this city a pleasant, safe and cosmopolitan place.

The inhabitants, called “salmantinos” are welcoming, likable and open, qualities which makes settling into everyday life in Spain and in Salamanca in particular extremely easy for foreign students.

Salamanca has been the European Capital of Culture in 2002. This distinction in itself is enough to give you an idea of the cultural dimension which this city enjoys, its history, its people, and its future.

When you arrive in Salamanca, you will find a young city open to the world, which in its streets has a mixture of architecture and monuments, both classical and modern. Without a doubt we are talking about one of the finest and most important cultural centres in Spain.

60,000 students from all over the world arrive in this city each year. If to these students, we add the students from your University, the result is a city which is totally devoted to university life, which cares about the art, about culture, about music, and of course, about entertainment and leisure.

If in Salamanca you are able to soak up the culture during the day, you can enjoy yourself too any night of the week in the city’s hundreds of bars and clubs. At weekends cultural as well as leisure and spare time activities increase.

Salamanca is at the heart of The Ruta de la Plata, from which you can visit interesting cities such as Madrid, Ávila, León, Oporto, Lisbon, Cáceres, etc... Besides being possible, it is recommended.

All these features of the city make it a perfect place to study Spanish. All you need is a couple of days to get to know the city, its secrets, its corners, and your favourite spots. Salamanca is a quiet city, without crowds, without traffic problems, without noise. A city where boredom doesn’t exist. There is something new to see everyday
